It was a cloudy morning in September when work started on the siding replacement for our house. When buying our dream home, we knew the siding needed to be replaced at some point. As with most American houses, the materials used in construction only last several decades at most. And the material used for our siding was no exception. In fact, there was at one point a class action lawsuit against the company responsible for producing these siding boards. The main reason being that over time, they absorb moisture and cause all sorts of issues such as rotting and mold in your walls. A scary thought!
We had an estimate done in January of 2021 which came out to around 26k for the job. At the time, because of the lockdown and some job insecurity, we decided to save that money for a rainy day instead. The company that did the original quote also assured us that mold was probably not an issue in our case. Some months went by, and my job situation gradually looked more stable. Re-siding the house wasn’t really at the top of our minds yet until we got a visit from Power Home Remodeling. Even though we have a sign at the entrance of our neighborhood stating, “No Solicitors”, not many solicitors seem to notice this sign. “We just happen to be doing some work in the neighborhood so we were wondering if we can give you a free quote for replacing your siding”. Its amazing how many companies happen to be doing work in your neighborhood. Being the Dutchman that I am, a free quote did intrigue me sufficiently, so we decided to schedule an appointment. Because we were mid lockdown pandemic style and had a baby on the way, we didn’t feel comfortable having them enter our home. Their way of working required this unfortunately, so we ended up cancelling the appointment. Later, I would understand why they insisted on entering our home.
Another couple of months went by and we were now a happy family of three. Power home remodeling had called us several times asking if morning or afternoon would be better for them to come by to do the quote. We finally gave in. Their guy was very thorough to say the least. Using a moisture meter to measure the outside of the house, going into the attic to see the isolation. There was most likely mold behind the walls, and you wouldn’t want your baby to be exposed to that right? Then he gave a two-hour presentation praising their proprietary product (which wasn’t all that proprietary). A lot of fluff and scare tactics to pressure us to sign on the spot for the whopping price of sixty thousand dollars! No thank you! He then immediately offered a 15k discount if we signed right there and then. We kindly declined.
Although he didn’t get his sale, Power Home Remodeling guy did (re)instill a sense of urgency with us. I started working on getting some more quotes that ended up ranging from 32k to 19k. The lowest bid was also the highest rated company and since material- and labor costs will likely only go up, we pulled the trigger and contracted HP exteriors Atlanta to re-do the siding on our house. After a job well done and a color well picked, we are very pleased with the result. For your viewing pleasure I have made a video detailing the work:
